About the Hero
Amar Rahe — अमर रहे
On July 1, 1999, Naik Hem Singh Yadav of the elite 9 Para (Special Forces) made the supreme sacrifice in the Tiger Hill theatre of Drass-Kargil, where Indian and Pakistani troops fought at extreme altitude for control of peaks overlooking National Highway 1. The climactic phase of the battle saw a major assault open on 3 July 1999 with massed artillery (including dozens of batteries) and air support; Indian forces secured Tiger Hill Top on the morning of 8 July 1999 — a milestone in Operation Vijay. His courage and selfless sacrifice are part of the price India paid to reclaim every inch of its soil.
